ACTIVITIES

Training workshops

A major activity of CIRF is the organisation of training workshops regarding the topics of stream restoration.
As an example the following workshops were or will be held in 2002:

April 11/12/13 2002 - Collecchio (PR)
Simulation workshop

MANAGING ENVIRONMENTAL CONFLICTS ON THE TARO RIVER: to try in order to understand, to understand in order to believe, to believe in order to act

The traditional approach to decision making (final condition of a river, planning, etc) generally follows the scheme decision-announcement-defence, and the main limit is the presence of more or less explicit conflicts of interests.
Two key elements were introduced during the workshop: a dynamic dimension to the decision process, with an active role of the ‘public’ and organising the evaluation through a ‘multicriteria approach’.
During the event, participants have ‘lived’ the ‘bottom-up’ participation process for a case study, aimed to the definition of the asset of a river.

June 3/4/5 2002 - Trento

NEW TECHNICAL AND CONCEPTUAL APPROACHES FOR THE MANAGING AND RESTORATION OF MOUNTAIN STREAMS

The workshop was intended to present technical and conceptual means so as to stimulate an integrated and sustainable management of streams, with particular emphasis on mountain areas.

May 9/10/11 2002 - Passignano sul Trasimeno (PG)
Workshop for technicians with expertise in waste water treatment

NEW ECOLOGICAL TECHNOLOGIES FOR WASTE WATER TREATMENT

The workshop introduced the new ‘philosophy’ in waste water treatment, from "cleaning plant fragmentation" to secondary use of treated waters and opportunities for multipurpose projects (wetland construction, hydraulic compatibility etc.).
Evidence was given to the processes, practices and feasibility of natural water cleaning opportunities.

May 23-24-25 2002 - Gole di Alcantara Motta Camastra (CT)

STREAM RESTORATION: RECENT IDEAS FOR NEW APPROACHES

Basic workshop concerning new approaches to stream restoration. The aims of the workshop were to present the different hydraulic and environmental approaches, to make clear the meaning of natural engineering and stream restoration, to classify the techniques according to their aims.
Particular attention was focused on the principles of an ecosystemic vision of rivers and to the planing of stream restoration, analysing some case studies.

September 26/27/28 2002 - Orbetello (GR)

BUFFER STRIPS: THEORY, PRACTICE, OPPORTUNITIES

Following the theoretical workshop organised in 2000, this workshop aims to a detailed knowledge of buffer strip functions and managing.
The program will range from the Community Agricultural Policy to practical aspects as the planning of buffer strip corridors, their development and maintenance, the arousal of awareness in the public.

October 2/4 2002 - S. Quirico d'Orcia (SI)

THE GEOMORPHOLOGIC APPROACH TO THE MANAGEMENT AND RESTORATION OF STREAM CHANNELS
Channel and bank instability: identification, analysis and implications in river management and restoration.

The main aim of this workshop is to promote knowledge about the geomorphologic approach and its typical methods and their possible use in the field of stream restoration and in a wider sense in the planning and management of freshwater resources.
