Director of the section "River re-naturalisation" of the ARPAT (Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment - Tuscany), he is an expert in stream ecology and biological monitoring; on this subjects he has been the author of books and manuals and lecturer in numerous courses. He was a co-founder of CISBA (Italian Centre of Studies in Environmental Biology) and he is editor in chief of the review "Biologia Ambientale" (environmental biology).
He is a member of the Technical Committee of River Magra Public Authority and of the National Scientific Committee of Legambiente.
